Families hand down the recipe for their “gravy” from one generation to another. This is my wife’s version, and it so amazing that family members drink it straight from mugs before the meal.
  • 12 cans (5 oz) Del Monte tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ onion, chopped
  • 1½ lbs. (700g) ground beef
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 2 sweet Italian sausages
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)

  1. Add tomato sauce to large stockpot and cook over medium heat.
  2. Meanwhile, heat olive oil in non-stick pan over medium heat, add meat, onions, and garlic.
  3. Cook until meat is browned, then add to stockpot with bay leaf, Italian seasoning and pepper.
  4. Brown sausages in pan, add to stockpot. Heat sauce just until boil, lower to simmer, then cook for 2 – 2½ hours, stirring occasionally.
  5. Sample sauce and add up to 1 teaspoon of sugar to taste.
